Financial help needed please!!!

Hi, im a student going into my second year at university. i move back into halls at the end of the month.

However, at the moment im strapped for cash. i wasn't able to get a job this summer as i tried ever avenue i could think of, but to no avail. about half of my friends weren't able to get a job where we live either and the others had saturday jobs from when we were at school. so therefore all i've had to live off is my savings from my year out before i went to uni.

my concern thats really worrying me is that i wont have enough money to get the stuff i need for uni....as i have only a small amount of savings left and i only have a small overdraft as i thought i wouldn't need a big one intially because i had worked in my year out. even though my family will help, there income is low. also im worried about what ill live off till my loans come in. when i do get my loans ill be ok because i no how to cut so that it will stretch further so im not worried once my loans come in, its just from now till then.

ive made a list of all the stuff i will need for uni, but i do have stuff from last year ill be taking back with me aswell. all the things on my list i aim to get for uni will also be supermarket own, such as wilkinsons own toilet paper, which is about 70p for 6 etc

i have nothing of value that i can sell on ebay as ive already checked as i never had anything like games consoles or anything like that.

also i would like to add that im not spending any money currently because i rarely go out, therefore i dont have any outgoings.

any advice on how to generate money would be greatly appreciated. thank you

You could ask your bank to increase your overdraft slightly?

How many weeks are we talking about, and how much are your parents going to help out?

If it is only two/three weeks max then I'd have thought you'll only need £100 absolute tops you should only be talking about food and toilettries etc? You can certainly survive on pasta and baked beans for that length of time.

I am sure your parents won't mind donating a bottle of shampoo/shower gel - not ideal long term but shower gel does both jobs. And maybe some washing powder/washing up liquid and the like - you won't needs lots.

What have you got on your list?

Talk to your bank about your overdraft. If you explain the situation (it's to tide you over until your loan comes in, etc), they'll almost certainly say yes.

Could you ask your mum to pick you up a couple of bits and pieces on the family shop, eg a bag of pasta or a tin of beans? Every little helps, as the saying goes. Most mums wouldn't mind!
  • Thanks for the advice and i will talk to the bank.
