cheap student laptop?

hi, am looking for a laptop for my daughter. She is doing a Maths degree so won't be using it for uni work (maths apparently is all licensed programs) It's really for networking, keeping in touch etc, use witha webcam, playing music, internet. How much should I pay and what should I look for..want one that is dependable! Someone suggested Dell. any advice would be very welcome! Thanks

If she is really not going to use it for Uni work, though I don't see why not, she could consider a Netbook, such as Medion Akoya Mini 10" NETBOOK E1210 or the Acer Aspire One A150-Bb.

For a standard laptop, they begin around 250 pounds with the Dell Vostro 1000. Link.

Firstly, you should find out her personal preferences.

I prefer to have something with everything built in, should as Webcam, Bluetooth and Card Reader.

More info on the Medion here.

PC World version with built in Bluetooth and higher quality webcam here. Same price.

An idea of the size compared to a 'normal' laptop here.

Does the PC World come with a 3 year warranty (or any?)

Careful, many "bargains" come with linux OSs. Windows would really put the price up.
Nothing against Linux systems... so long as you know what you are buying

Use www.dmxdimension.com to find the best dell deals. You will struggle to beat their prices.

Avoid anything with 'Celeron' in the processor name - usually for another £20 you can get a Duo processor.

Dell also have a new netbook out. I've one on order - Inspiron Mini 9 - £299.
