i have just had a phone line installed by BT.
and instead of waiting until the weekend to make calls i'm thinking of signing up to primus to get free evening calls.
is it worth it, what happens, and does it alter my contract with BT??

It doesn't alter your contract with BT at all - it just means that your outgoing calls go, by default, via Primus.

Don't forget to use the 1280 prefix to make a few calls via BT at weekends to qualify for free Caller Display.

  • do a search on here, I'm sure there's a lot of info on their schemes/deals/price plans

You may have a call package contract so make sure you check first or it may cost you.

And DO NOT CHANGE LINE RENTAL TO PRIMUS.
  • I was just about to change line rental to primus...could you say why you recommend not too please? Thanks

Please does anyone know from what time primus free evening calls start?

If you move line rental away from BT you may not be able to CPS to other phone providers.

I think evenings start at 18:00 hrs, but Heinz will be along soon to confirm or otherwise.

Yes, Primus's 'evenings' start at 6pm and end at 8am (most other calls providers use the BT standard of 6pm to 6am).

With regard to line rental, only BT allows you to CPS your calls to another provider (they have to) but the real reason not to hand over your line rental is doing so will result in you paying whatever the line provider wants to charge for calls, preventing you from using the 1280 code to 'hop back onto BT' for calls for which BT is cheaper and may result in you being barred from using the likes of 18185, 1899 and 18866.
