Gas pilot light saving
I only have a Baxie Gas fire and central heating and the pilot light on the fire i leave on so i don't have to ignite each time. Of course over the summer it is not used but I have still left it on.I have now done a check on the cost of keeping it on taking a reading over a couple of weeks and it works out at £5 month. So I will be turning it off completly each time I suppose it it was like leaving a tv on standby. Every little helps.

my dad did this with his boiler pilot light one summer when they were away for a month - he worked out it would save him £2 a week- unfortunatly he could not get the light re-lit when he got home and he had to call out a gas engineer to sort it out when he got back, it cost more than the money he had saved.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

Definitely waiting for more info on this - as my pilot light on my gas sitting room fire is on permanently - £5 - £9 per month for nothing!!!!!!
All comments welcome - cant believe that teensy little thing could be costing me that much. Hoping its safe for me to blow that light out and only relight it if I want to use the fire. It sometimes blows out of itself - which I only find out if I go to switch the fire on - and I always relight it okay no problem with a long match - so I guess it must be safe to have it off.

Hi freya,
As your thread has fallen from the first page of Old Style I've moved it over to the Gas and Electric board to see if you can get more replies.

I can't see my boiler's pilot light, but it has an on/off switch on the front.

We couldn't see how we could have used so much gas, my husband checked the pilot light on the boiler and discovered it was too high, so he turned it down and it made a huge difference to the gas consumption.0

This was discussed in some depth here:

I was really surprised at the amount of gas a pilot light uses.0 -

Other than a more efficient boiler, any other ways I could reduce my gas consumption with this boiler?Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
OK, yes, I am sad, but every time I saw that huge Olympic Flame in Beijing all I could think of was: 'I wonder how much that ruddy thing is costing?'Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
Mine used to be on, and it was costing £5 a month easily. Now it's off while the heating is off. My system is well-maintained, though.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.
