I hope I'm putting this thread on the right board...
I'm hoping someone can help me with how to get foreign language channels via saterlite. I'm after gettting french/german/dutch/arabic speaking channels although i have a feeling the european channels can be got from having a dish pointing in a different direction to the arabic channels. Can anyone give me any information about this? We had sky previously and the dish is still on the side of the house but we only have a freeview box.Can anyone give this technophobe ANY help please?

Sky is pointed at 28 degrees east, now if you move the dish and point it at 13 degrees east you will get a satellite called hotbird and this has all you want and most of it is free to air (no card required) - its a big signal so you will have no problem picking it up - you can also try 19 degrees east, this is astra - not as much on it but worth a look.

If you try to use your usual Sky box for any of the above non-Sky satellites, it will not automatically tune anything, You will need to laboriously set each channel manually from a list. Might be worth getting a standard non-sky sat receiver for this purpose, eg Aldi was doing one for under £40.0

Astra at 19.2°E for the French channels (digital - requires official TNT box)
Astra at 19.2°E for the Dutch channels (digital - requires official Canal card)
If you just want to try out a selection of all languages, then a free to air digital box for either Astra or Hot Bird will do. You should be able to move your dish to either satellite (is it a "Sky analogue" or "Sky digital" dish? The former is already pointing to Astra at 19°E, you just need a box).
Astra: all German channels, some French channels, one Dutch channel and some Arabic channels.
"Astra" that will be now what's called Astra 1 as there is Astra 2 group of satellites that are used by Sky and other UK broadcasters.
I hate the term 'Sky Analogue' sounds too brainwashed to me - granted may have been used for simplisity, but I remember the good old days back in the 1980s when it was just called satellite and then later analogue satellite before Sky managed to brainwash the public into thinking satellite meant on Sky.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
