Kitchen waste in brown bin

Daughter just moved in a new flat. She told me she cannot put her kitchen waste e.g vegetables peelings or chicken bones in a plastic bag and then throw in the brown bin. I am interested to know about any tips as just throwing vegetables peels in the brown bin will cause it to stick at the bottom and make a mess!! She is thinking may be she should wrap them in newspaper or line the bottom of the bin. To make matter worse her downstairs neighbour uses her bin to put her rubbish. She has had word with her and she still does it and pretend it is not her. I live in Bucks and we always throw our kitchen waste in plastic bags in the green big. She lives in Harrow and they are very strict there. Thanks

Here in Herts we are getting another wheelie this month. We have the large green, getting a black to replace the bags. In today's local paper, it looks like they are advising we can put food waste in both bins, but to wrap in paper not plastic when putting into green wheelie.
A separate moanif they want us to collect green waste.. no objection, why when I have been busy cutting the holly and ivy down , producing an extra load , do they ONLY accept one wheelie and not a second bag .

Being a good neighbour , I jet wash a few wheelies every few weeks.
If I drag out the machine for mine, I may as well do a number:D0 -
Everything in the bin has to be bio-degradable so no plastic. Wrap it in several layers of newspaper and it will be fine. I don't think I would put any meat or fish in at all, but put this in plastic bags and in the general rubbish.0

Hiya,
We've had to segregate our waste for some time now (we can be fined for putting stuff in th 'wrong' bin  !!!!).
We have a wheelie bin for general waste which is emptied fortnightly, a brown bin for food waste - emptied weekly, and weekly recycling collections of glass, tins, paper, card, engine oil, clothes & shoes, batteries........
When we have food waste (not a lot in our house) we wrap it in newspaper, which is one of the things the Council recommend. We have a small brown 'caddy' type container to keep in the kitchen, which I line with newspaper, then wrap up and transfer to the bigger brown bin when full, or on collection day.
I also have a similar small green caddy which I bought in Sainsburys so I can segregate my composting in the kitchen.
Small bits of food waste I often put into junkmail envelopes to go into the food bin too.
The system works really well, and although lots of people moaned when it first came in, most are happy with it now.
The only thing I wish was that they collected plastic - I keep a separate plastic dustbin for plastic bottles, lined with a black binliner, then when full I take it to the supermarket as they have a recycling point for plastic. We hope the Council might start taking plastic next year though. The best advice you can give your children: "Take responsibility for your own actions...and always Read the Small Print!"
