You might find that the law varies from region to region. A suggestion........contact the Spanish Embassy in London. Defra are likely to give you a 'generic' answer but they always play on the safe side and tell you to contact the local authority out there for specific details.

Another stupid law. Presumably the first thing the authorities do when investigating a possible breach is to weigh the dog. Absolutely ridiculous.

You could always phone the Defra helpline they should know that way you get it from the horses mouth so to speak

I never heard of it?? My mum lives in Spain with her 3 giant schnauzers, and often takes them to the square for a coffee, she doesnt muzzle them, they are on leads though. When she takes them to the beach and for walks they are off the lead, she lives in Aguilas, may phone her tommorrow and see if she has heard this, wouldnt want one of her cruft babies being shot x x

Got the answer (sort of). I have an interest in a cafe/restuarant in Mallorca and was over there at the weekend. I asked the owner who has a sizeable Dalmation (about 35kg), if he knew what this was all about. Essentially it is about the breed. His is not on the list to require control / muzzle and can still be out in public without these. He was quite surprised at this as the dog is a complete maniac. Weight sort of comes into it as it is only larger breeds such as Rotties, Dobies, Labs and various mediterranean sheepdogs. Third party insurance is required for all dogs. It is enforced by the Policia local and Guardia civil and there are on-the-spot fines for non compliance. Any advice on the actual list of breeds should be taken to the Spanish embassy in the first instance.
