Blank monitor - worth fixing?

My medion LCD monitor went black yesterday ( you can see very faintly that the PC is on in the background but not enough to know where mouse is etc). Have tried with a borrowed monitor & all well - is it worth repairing mine or is it definitely a case of buying another one now? ( Original nearly five years old). Thanks!

No can't do electronics and can't solder - it would need to be a non - diy job!
  • You could probably get it repaired, but with parts + labour you could probably replace it for around the same price

Thanks, that's exactly what I was wondering...looks like it's a new one then!

The fact that you still get an outline, but none of the white backlight bulbs are firing means that the backlight invertor is kaput, if it's any help.

It's not too hard to do a direct replacement with a new part for a technically inclined person, but half the battle is finding a suitable replacement - they only cost about £20, but you have to get it exactly right and there's hundreds out there.

I wouldn't take it to a shop and ask them to fix it. They might well try it and charge you half or more the amount of a new monitor.

So unless you yourself or someone you know is confident they can do the repair, (and find the exact part online) it's not worth it.

it depends what it is - it could be the backlight inverter or the backlight itself -

I just replaced a backlight inverter for a friends laptop for about £10 .
