Any caravanners here?

Hello campers! Thought i'd warn anyone about an awful caravan site. Last Friday, me and my parents went on a break to Filey, but as they had heavy rainfall, our chosen site was waterlogged, so our auntie booked us a pitch at Muston Grange.
The holliday was good, but the site was terrible. We thought we would check out the facilities, and there was a block just a walk away. The shower and toilet blocks were disgusting, they smelt awful and the floor was dirty, (this was both facility blocks, i may add). They were still dirty on the Monday, the day before we left. Showers were 40p a token, and oddly enough there was no stool to get dried on in the cubicle, very dissapointing, and no where else have we been charged that much for a shower, its just pure greediness. The sinks were dirty and didnt look clean, and i hated to imagine what the brown stuff was on the front of the unit.
The potwashing facility was also disgusting. On the sink next to the one we i used, there was orange spots. I didnt know whether this was grease or rust, and there was dead flies all over the draining board. The bins still hadnt been emptied when we were leaving, they were probably full before we got on site.
Just before we were leaving, i decided to do some laundry. The machines in the block closest to us, were coin operated, but the washer was out of order, so i had a look at the other laundry facility, only to find out the sodding machines are token operated!! Why they cant be coin operated like everywhere else, i dont know. The site was very poorly maintained, and the grass was all chewed up, it was also untidy and shoody. The pitches were too close for comfort and felt very cramped. We paid £52 to stop 4 nights, what a rip off. I do not recommend this site at all, and I've been to a few in my teenage years, so avoid this site!

It most certainly isnt :D some of these sites charge an arm and a leg Camping isnt the cheap holiday it used to be, we have paid up to £27 a night on some camps, though for those prices the camps have always been spotless with ample facilities.

OP has paid £13, which would indicate a fairly basic site, but you should still expect cleanliness.

It may be worth looking on here:

Before you visit as I have always found it pretty reliable, although Muston Grange has good reviews.

TBH I don't think the op has given any consideration for the price they paid and they also don't do this frequently so couldn't give an expert verdict on the site. It's all off the top of the head with no knowledge of anything comparable.

I haven't been on a caravan holiday since the 90's but know the price paid would have a big impact on what you can expect. I also noticed the op is paying almost half the price per 24 hours than it would on average cost to park a car in most cities let alone a caravan so it obviously must be cheap if you think about it anyway.

As for the op's review vs a post above saying this site has mainly positive reviews. Just goes to show you need to take most complaints with a pinch of salt.

Well other have and they don't agree with you.

You've also got to remember it may have been a temporary problem, staff sickness? A lot of people don't realise when things go wrong at a location for them it may well be a one off.
  • This reminds me of one of our camping trips.

    A site called `Sacketts Grove`near Clacton.

We had been there 20 years previous to the trip of which I speak, which would have been about 1995.

It wasn't a lot of cop the first time but hubby reckoned it must have been updated in the 20 years between our first visit.

How wrong he was. Infact all that had happened was it had deterioated further.

The mens urinals consisted of a black tarred wall to pee against.

The ladies showers had a make shift tap to turn on the water and the plug holes were filled up with matted hair that acted as a plug to stop the water running away.

The toilet chemical disposal point was next the washing up basins and when you emptied the toilet waste away it flowed down an open pipe next to the washing up.

The whole site was a disgrace.

When I got home I wrote to Tendering Council to complain. Guess what they wrote back and said they visited the site and everything was in order. I can only think someone was getting a back hander.
  • personal recommendation is worth its weight in gold for a good site.......we have about 12 caravans parked on our road so someone always knows where best place to go is
    onwards and upwards

In fairness, you can only go on your own experiences and the facts as you find them at the time.

I would never go camping but if I stayed in a hotel and there was a problem, I feel that I would be entirely within my rights to complain - notwithstanding that other people may have previously (or subsequently) had a good experience.

I have been to Muston Grange on many occasions.

I was also there the weekend you are complaining about.

Yes the site was churned up, What do you expect after the British weather, we have had a lot of rain and when people have to tow over grass what do you expect?? Inconsiderate people who don't know how to go round corners without taking the corners off.
I know it's not the best site in the world and doesn't drain very well but your post isn't called for. And NO I'm not associated with the site in any way.

As for your comment about the toilets they ARE cleaned every day without fail. At lunch time you will find them closed for cleaning. When the site is as muddy I would say it's really hard for the wardens to keep them spotless as people are trailing in with muddy feet all day.
I can't vouch for the dish washing area as I have never used it or the laundry although I know that it is token operated.
As for the bins, people do generate a lot of rubbish and the bins do get full, they are emptied every week.(probably could do with emptying twice a week high season).

As you said in your original post your chosen site was closed due to being water logged did you think Muston would have escaped the rainfall?

I personally don't use the showers (I use my vans shower) and only use the toilets for a number 2. Have never had a problem and have never known the toilets to smell. I am fussy and wouldn't use them if they were dirty, I have been in there when the floor has been muddy from peoples muddy feet but what can you expect when the ground is muddy.
