Download Spybot Search and Destroy and MS Antispyware. Install, update both and run each one, one at a time. Then use HijackThis to analyse if there is still anything suspcious on the pc.
As Fran has said make sure AdAware is up to date and run it.
Eventually... Get rid of Avast and use AVG Free instead - much better.0 -
I would also recommend using Spybot as it looks as if your friend has a bad attack of spyware.
I'd also recommend following the procedure in this link to disable the messenger service0 -
is he on IE? if so change over to firefox that has an automatic pop up stopper. and is pretty good. dont delete I.E though as he will need that for microsoft security updates...spanky xx

make sure windows messenger is turned off. You can check start-control panel-admin tools-services. go to messenger and make sure it is disabled. (this doesn't affect msn messenger btw).0
