Retrieving data from dead hard drive, how much??

My PC has suffered a spike which has killed the hard drive.

I would like to retrieve the data but would have to pass it over to a specialist. Has anyone else had this done?

I would like an idea of the cost and if you could recommend a company/individual that could help, I would be eternally grateful.

Many thanx ;)

    Hi,

I've never got a quote but it is *always* very very expensive. Unless the data is that important to you I would not bother!

When you say it killed the hard drive, what happens when you boot the PC up?

Have your tried putting the hard drive as a "slave" as a second hard drive into another PC?

You might be able to remove some data and you will find plenty of recovery software on the net (some trial versions).

If the drive really has failed, I think you are looking in the region of £300-£900+

Thanks for your feedback guys. I have had quotes starting at £495.00 YIKES!!

My Pc won't boot at all. I have set the HD as master and as slave but to no avail. I plugged it in to another PC but it is dead, deceased, no more....

Even the Bios won't recognise it :(

Is it that the power's not getting to it at all, or is it making any kind of clicking noise?
If it's making any kind of noise, you can always stick it in the freezer for 20minutes and then reconnect it quickly to see if it spins. You *might* be able to get something off it.
  • Also, if its at least spinning up then you could search out an IDENTICAL model drive on Ebay and then swop the controller board over (the circuit board on the underneath of the drive). If its damage caused by a voltage spike then it will be the electronics of the controller rather than the physical platters or heads which are damaged. Not as difficult to do as it sounds.

I do not have !!!!!! or any such material on my hard drive!!

I did back up not too long ago but it's recent family photo's and my coursework/documents that I wanted to retrieve more than anything.

It bothers me that there will also be all sorts of user info on there too such as bank details, account numbers, passwords etc.......

The model is a Maxtor Diamond 10 200GB, funnily enough bought after info on this site.

It is not making any noise at all. I had a 120GB hard drive on the same PC which is also dead, not too bothered about that one 'cos I kept the O/S and Programs only on it.

There is no way I will be paying all that money to get my files back so look like a new PC for me, grrrrrrrr
