Turned down by nationwide for a current account despite having a good credit score

I don't have my salary paid in to NW, but they opened a Flexaccount for me, a little tip, open a savings account with them, put a few quid in it, that seems to have done the trick for me.
Thanks Inactive that seems a good idea. It's still annoying that nationwide weed people out on the sly & spuriously link it to alleged bad credit (regardless of what experian shows) when it appears to be about their bottom line instead. I still think Martin should make people aware of this in his travel money tips section when referring to the flex account.

I have a step account with natwest and a savings account and a cc with them.

When i asked to up grade my step account to a current account i was refused because i had defaulted on my abbey account which is all bank charges and they can go swing for those, i can honestly say that i don't owe abbey a penny. But £200 odd in bank charges..

This has obviously reared it's ugly head to stop me getting a grown up account with natwest, this was 2 months ago. then a few weeks ago when ringing up to replace my solo card as it is about to snap they said ooo you are entitled to a current account, i told em to sod off.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?
  • i had the same thing happend to me, i had full access to my experian report and scored in the high 900's prior to ending up in the poop financially, i had not missed any payments ever or even any late ones, just wanted to change banks as fed up with NATWEST but our branch said we failed their own credit scoring, we were going to use it as our main account which we explained at the time with two salaries being paid in each month but still refused. I went down the road to Lloyds and they opened one straight away no problems!
  • I've had exactly the same thing!! I only wanted to open a new cash account with Lloyds TSB. I went into a branch to open an account and was told that I had failed the Experian credit check. I checked this with Experian and my credit report came back as good, no missed payments etc....I contacted head office in TSB and they ran another check and said that my credit rating was fine but they still wouldn't let me open up a cash account and couldn't disclose why. This type of account accepts people with CCJ's and bad credit ratings but wont accept me. I've contacted the FSA as this worries me that I can be turned down but given no reason as to why. (as they are not at liberty to disclose) I thought thats' what the data protection was for!
Has anyone else had this and what can you do? Many thanks.

  • Data Protection Act probably a dead-end, as they will no doubt claim some exemption to avoid divulging their internal scoring systems.
It might be a better route to quote something from the Banking Code back at them - you know, about treating their customers fairly ... though they might then argue that you aren't a customer ...

Perhaps this section could be used?
6.1 When you apply to become a customer or accept a product for the first time, we will give you any relevant terms and conditions for the product you have asked us to provide.
I would have thought the basis on which they determine whether or not you can have "the product" is a pretty relevant part of the T&Cs ...
  • Hunter.....
  • Their customer service is horrendous; you're not missing anything. Try another bank.
