I was vegetarian from the age of 13 (and my parents respected my decision, so I'd be a hypocrite if I wasn't to respect my daughter's) til more or less the age of 26 (bacon butties cravings during pregnancy excepted). I am nigh on 6 ft tall, a well built, healthy lass... :D

Were you already nigh on 6ft by the age of 13 though ? ;)

    Hi,
I would get your daughter a vegetarian student cookbook, they have nice simple cheap recipes in, let her have a flick through and pick the things she would like to try, there are often lots of pasta meals and textured soya protein dishes in them. I turned vegetarian when i was 14 years old, my now husband followed suit 2 years later and we now have 4 children, who are all brought up vegetarian. They have all been very healthy, and eat good varied diets. My oldest son has gone through puberty fine and is full of energy. As is my little 3 year old that doesnt stop all day!! My husband cycles 30 miles a day to and fro to work.
I personally never liked meat substitutions when i gave up eating meat initially as i couldnt understand why someone would want to eat something that was supposed to resemble meat, I still now arent totally convinced by them, barbeque season always makes me want a sausage and a burger, but i never enjoy them when it comes to eating them. The children enjoy the sausages and the burgers, but to be honest it isnt something i would give to them weekly. We eat lots of pulses, pastas, currys etc. A lot cheaper and healthier.
    Best of luck to you.
Best of luck to you both!
It's the start of the no takeaway challenge.

I have to disagree with that - a varied vegetarian diet can be far healthier than many a meat eater's one.

That's very true, but it's also true to say that a varied meat-inclusive diet can be far healthier than many a vegetarian's one. ;)

A purely vegetarian or vegan diet can easily provide every nutrient the body needs, but it often needs more thought to be put into the diet than if meat wasn't consumed.

    Hi
I agree with Mum of 4 about getting hold of a vegetarian student cookbook. Also if you can get her to help you cook her food occasionally. If you make a big fuss she might dig her heels in but she does need plenty of nutrients when she is growing so fast. She could maybe join the vegetarian society who have loads of younger members (peer power is always bestter than dear old Mum)

Good luck (and remember no healthy child will ever starve):rotfl: :rotfl:

I have a similar daughter - she lives on: baked potatoes and cheese with fruit; pizza (you can hide loads of veg in the sauce if you make it yourself); wholemeal bread with a large assortment of nuts and seeds in it (use a breadmaker adn just add them with the flour); pasta dipped in fried egg and soup.

I am a veggie who hates vegetables and i'm 21, and i've grown up just fine....as i've grown older I eat a few more, so please don't put pressure on her to sit and eat veg, through my own experience if it was done to me I was even more defiant and didn't, if mum left me too it I would. My mum would agree i'm sure that my diet has improved so much as i've grown older!

But the best way, i would say is like the others have...make veggie burgers (there's lots of good recipes on here) and sauces with veg hidden in. Try the meat substitutes if she can or likes them
