No, it is 05601 - they are a new area code for VOIP numbers:

We have also made available a new number range, starting 056, for new voice services like VoB. These numbers are not related to a specific local area and so could be used for new services that can be used from anywhere with a broadband internet connection.

Whoops, didn't know that, My Sipgate number is a local exchange number, that can be accessed locally without the area code ie 8***** so thought it might be the same with Voipcheap. :o

    Easy mistake

There has been almost no publicity surrounding this new area code so it is not surprising people get confused. If the OP had lived in London and the number had come out 44207xxx he would have figured it out straight away.

Edit: just noticed the OP lives in Stoke on Trent so I should've said 441782xxxx ;)

I read a post somewhere that they charge roughly 5p/min-day, 2p ev, 1p we.

    A "bit" similar to 0845.

    Are you on NTL?

Apparently NTL are not allowing calls to these numbers in some parts of the country

BT used to hide their full pricelist away AND publish it in one of the most obscure document formats known to man [with my 20+ year's of IT experience I'd never come across it before or since].

However nowadays you can find it with only a few clicks and is in Adobe Reader PDF format. The only downsize is that it's 44 pages long, although only 290Kb in size.

To save you looking its at:
    http://www.downloads.bt.com/pricing/SpecialisedNos.pdf

All 056... prefixed numbers are pricing band g21 and ARE eligible for friends/family discounting.

Band g21 "New Voice Services" prices including VAT are:
    Daytime - ie 6am to 6pm weekdays = 4.89p/min
    Evening/nighttime = 2.0p/min
    Weekend - ie 48hrs Sat/Sun = 1.18p/min

ie noticably more than local/0845 at 3.0p/1.0p/1.0p respectively
but also cheaper than national/0870 at 7.51p/3.75p/1.5p
