Spanner in my works

Im a single parent with a 5yo, working 16hrs a weeka and off to college for 3 days a week (full time) and i volunteer for 16hrs pcm

I have a very bad credit history but i have been paying off my debts nicely and just got a bank account back after a few years of not being able to have one. Things were starting to look quite positive for me... until this morining. I had a call for those lovely people down at the tax credits office to tell me i have been over paid by £600!!!!!!!!

£200 from 2004/5 and £400 from 2006/7.. They said they have wrote to me many times but I have honestly never had one letter about this???

Money is tight for me right now, just as i thought I was sorting myself out and feeling real good about my finances, this happened.

Where do I stand? what can I do???

Also, as I am going to be a full time student the week after next, is there any additional help I can get with council tax etc as I still work 16hrs a week???

At the very worst, they can only reclaim it as a small percentage of your current payments - around 10% AFAIK. Regarding being entitled to anything else, I'm afraid not although I'd be seeing if there's any financial help from the college in the form of bursaries.

Ok, thats for that conor! beter than all at once I suppose
  • I was exempt from council tax when I was a full time student with children, even though I was working 16 hours and claming tax credits.

I was at Uni though, not sure if its different with college. They gave me a form to send to the council tax office

if you are a full time student regardless of working you will not have to pay council tax.
single people / parents get 100%
    couples get 25% rebate

council will have to give you a form for the college to sign and stamp, and then return to the council again
