Access to my Electric Meter

Hi

With the recent hikes in gas/elec we decided to keep a closer eye on our daily/weekly amounts used on the meters.

We have both gas/elec through British Gas..we can read the gas meter easily as it is in the airing cupboard in the flat, but the electric meter is in a locked cupboard in the communal entrance to the flats with all the other tenants meters.

Watching the meter reader is a farce, he couldnt distinguish how to tell me what was my meter from all the others, surely Im allowed access to check my electricity consumption, and the communal lights, door security are all run from a meter in this cupboard key, the council says it cannot let everyone have access as they could fiddle the meters somehow..there all credit meters.

Im happy to be on a credit meter and not pay as you go as I understand the tariffs are higher on prepayment, but what if my circumstances change, would I be able to have a pre payment meter.

Yes you obviously should be allowed to read your meter and check you bills are correct.

However that is betwen you and the council to sort out.
