£200 and a library card.
Borrow Haynes 'Build your own computer' and you'll easily knock up a dual core pc thats pretty high spec for that.
Or the RAM upgrade.0 -
This is my current spec
AMD Sempron 2600+ 1.85 ghz 700MB Ram is that bad?
do I need an upgrade? would a laptop that just has 2Ghz be much faster than my comp?0 -
Its not bad but it is old. Depends what you want to do with it? It wouldn't play any even remotely new games, but then you say you dont game.
Clock speeds mean almost nothing when comparing different generations. A modern Intel Core2 based system running a 2Ghz would probably be close to an order of magnitude more powerful that your existing maching.
I was looking to upgrade recently to make a gaming machine and I was looking at around £350 for a good spec (not the latest and greatest but a big improvement on what I currently have).
If you are techically minded and dont mind fiddling with things then I'd highly recommend building your own. Its not as difficult as most people think and you'll get a lot more for your money.
If you are not technically minded or just not interested in building/maintaining your own then you could buy a complete system.
Not that a lot of systems dont come with a new monitor.0 -
if you want you could experiment with ubuntu, ubuntu is another operating system like windows 2000, XP, vista0

I would update the ram in your existing pc, and then look to do a full upgrade in maybe a year or so

Depends what you do with it to be honest. I have one desktop that is similarly spec'd to that, except 1GB RAM, I use it primarily for internet browsing and office work and it is fine for that task. This is my current spec
