Car insurance for 1 month only?

I cancelled my car insurance when I went to university but would like to drive my car again when I go home for christmas.

Is there a way of just buying one months insurance? Or would I have to sign up for a year and then cancel?
(I am the only driver)

If I have to cancel then does it get recorded for all insurance companies to see?

  • If it's possible, the best route might be to add your vehicle as a temporary additional vehicle to your parent's insurance. You would have to make sure that the insurer knew that you'd be the main driver though and that you are the owner/keeper of the vehicle.

Not sure if there are still any insurers doing short period policies (there used to be some who'd issue up to 3 months cover). Starting a new contract and then cancelling mid-term after a month is likely to be prohibitively expensive.

Insurers cannot generally check whether or not you've cancelled in this way but the contract is one of "utmost good faith" so you are obliged to answer the questions on a proposal fairly and accurately. Withholding information about previous insurance history could be grounds for invalidating your cover.

    Thanks for the reply.

My parents don't drive so have no insurance. I have relatives that drive but they don't live with me - can I add me and the car to their insurance somehow?

Try to find a company that do pro-rata refunds for cover.

Abbey used to on the Motor product but its off sale now.

I'm sure there must be others.

Just ring up and cancel after the period you want and you'll get 11 months premium back or better still pay monthly DD.

The only info that would go out is you being insured and then cancelled to the MIDB.

The MIDB is unlikely to be interogated by another company unless for a claim to check other parties insurance details and check for dual insurance etc in the event of an accident.
