laptop problem

A few weeks ago i posted a problem with my laptop It is an acer Travelmate 240. It wont start up i just get messages for example
Intel UNDI PXE - 2- 0 (build 082
PXE - MOF - Exiting PXE Rom
Operating System not found
PXE - E61 media test failure
I cant get passed this page it wont let me reboot. Someone suggested to run the windows recovery disc through it but wouldnt i need to restore it to factory setting or would this not matter as it wont go on any other page or connect to the internet or even just go to the home page. I know i have probably lost my photos and music etc but would be grateful of any suggestions. I have had this laptop a few years now but have really only regularly used it in the last nine months but it is probably time to look for a new one. Thanks in advance

  • Your laptop is trying to do a PXE boot (Preboot Execution Environment) - basically its trying to boot from a network.

PC's have a boot order - usually something along the lines of:-
    1. Floppy
    2. HDD
    3. Network

You wouldn't normally see the network boot as it should boot to your HDD first. It could be that your HDD has died so it then looks for the next item in the boot order list and trys to boot from that.

It's possible that for some reason your boot order has gotten mixed up, if you can get into your BIOS and check what the boot order is set to. You may also be able to see it your laptop is detecting its HDD from the BIOS.

Prior to the PXE screen do you see a message along the lines of "no valid boot disc"
  • I had the same problem on a Samsung laptop. It was the hard drive ribbon cable that was loose. Locate yuor hard drive and make sure its cable is seated correctly on the drive and the motherboard. With my samsung it only needed slight pressure on the motherboard end to get it working.
