Double Glazing and Conservatory Replacement Quote

I apologise in advance as this is a lengthy post.

I'm in South East London and looking to get all windows and doors, including those in the conservatory changed.

The quotes are all for the following work;

For the house there is one door and 11 windows
1. Front door (composite) with small fanlight above.
2. 3 sided bay window with the front part to have 2 side casement openers and 2 fanlight openers.
3. Obscure glass with top fanlight opener and trickle vent
4. Obscure glass
5. Obscure glass
6. 2 side casement openers and 2 fanlight openers.
7. 1 side casement opener and 1 fanlight opener.
8. 2 side casement openers and 1 fanlight opener.
9. 1 side casement opener and 1 fanlight opener, obscure glass and trickle vent

Window 4 is on the stairs and so needs to be toughened safety glass, windows 6, 7 & 8 are bedroom windows and so need to have fire escape access.

For the conservatory, which is already there and is a lean to with two solid walls and a half wall along the front there are two doors and two windows and a new roof. The measurement is 4.6m x 2.6m

1. Upvc door
2. French doors
3. 2 fanlight openers
4. 2 fanlight openers
5. Polycarbonate roof, with anti glare and an opening roof vent
6. Replace the shiplap, which is between the top of the side walls and the roof, with upvc panels.

The one detail I do not have from all the quotes is the window sizes, but could get these if it helps.

The quotes have come in as follows;
Company no 1 was £14,676 (£7,188 for the house and £7,488 for the conservatory).
Company no 2 was £12,500 (£6,400 for the house and £6,100 for the conservatory).
Company no 3 was £13,176 (£5,976 for the house and £7,200 for the conservatory).

On the whole, due to building regulations I assume, the products are very similar. What differences there were are as follows;

1. Company no 1 has said they can put anti glare glass into house windows 4 and 5, which are on the side of the house and on a sunny day it gets quite hot. The other two companies said that the windows they fit would cope.

2. Company no 1 will use Solar inserts (http://www.polycool.co.uk) in the polycarbonate sheets, whereas the other companies will use opal polycarbonate sheets

So not only is there a difference in the overall price, which I expected, but also in the cost of the work for the house and the conservatory.

Anyone able to say if any, or all, prices seem fair.

Thanks,

Phil

  • its hard to give idea of price on windows without sizes .conservatory seems ott considering the walls are already there

  • Thanks a6windows. I will get the tape measure out tonight.

Just to clarify, are you saying all 3 conservatory quotes are OTT? Also having re-read my original post I realised that I forgot to mention that the roof supports are also being replaced. Essentially the only thing not being replaced are the walls. Not sure if that makes the quotes any less OTT.
  • Right then measurements as follows

For the house there is one door and 11 windows
    1. Front door 900mm x 2320mm.
    2. Bay window 600mm x 1480mm + 2280mm x 1480mm + 600mm x 1480mm
    3. 620mm x 1175mm
    4. 630mm x 1175mm
    5. 620mm x 1500mm
    6. 2370mm x 1175mm
    7. 1190mm x 1185mm
    8. 1785mm x 1170mm
    9. 1200mm x 1160mm

    For the conservatory

    1. Door 880mm x 2040mm

    2. French doors 1440mm x 2030mm
    3. 1570mm x 1300mm
    4. 1560mm 1300mm
  • if from what i read of your desciption of conservatory quote you have set of french doors, single door, 2 windows in front elevation(solid walls to sides)roof and cladding to apex both sides .then yes your quotes are ott if you confirm this or add a picture i can give you a better idea

  • a6windows your description is spot on. If I can work out how to post pictures I'll try and do that as well. Although with the weather at the moment I'm not sure what you would see.

Do you know why all 3 companies would be quoting over the odds? And what would be a fair price?

Also do the quotes for just the house seem fair?

Perhaps I'll just get those done, and see if I can another quote for the conservatory.
  • the window quote from company 3 is about average price i would say .you are better getting one company for everything .where are you located
if you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction
  • I'm in Bromley, Kent.

Funnily enough the OH favours company no 3, which is a local company who make their own windows.
  • do you know what profile they are using for the frames.also i think you are splitting your house windows up with to many openers personally i think there will be to much upvc
if you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction
  • The frames are 70 mm, but the company (Sutton Windows) has these new slim line ovalo window frames, which as the salesman kept telling us was 5mm thinner on each side than anyone elses, and means there is not as much upvc.

There's a house a couple of doors up from us and we've copied what they have done as we quite like it.
