Restoring windows xp on laptop

Daughter has a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M1425 laptop which requires Windows XP home to be reinstalled. Two companies have advised her that this is the best action to be taken. She cannot find the CD'S which came with the PC!
£45 has been quoted for the removal and restoration to factory state.
Please advise me as to how I can sort it out for her. I have copied all her files onto DVD.
Many thanks.

As long as the Certificate of Authenticity sticker is still on the bottom of the laptop, it doesn't matter too much about the original CD, you can borrow another.
See here:

The very first bit refers to the possible need to change a setting or two so that the computer boots to a CD-ROM instead of windows on the hard disk. According to the Fujitsu website, all you need to do is press F12 as you switch it on to do this with your laptop:

I am unable to do system restore.
Using a Windows XP disc to start up I am getting the error code 4096. Help please:hello:0 -
Sounds like a file isn't copying properly. A quick google around suggests it might just be because the CD is dirty.
Maybe try giving it a clean and trying again? Let us know how you get on.Russia is HERE0 -
Reinstalling XP can be quite tricky. Not for the installing of XP as such but getting everything to work afterwards. It really should be the VERY last course of action, and is possibly beyond your technical abilities.
So first things first. Whats actually wrong with the computer?:idea:0 -
Thanks for your input everyone, my knowledge is limited but I want to learn.
I have cleaned the cd and now get error msg 4 \i386\halacpi.dll
Laptop is very slow after she dropped it. Windows loads up but cannot do certain tasks eg. system restore.:hello:0 -

in which case don't count on restore remedying this problem: this could be hardware related.BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

Re install is quite easy and the fun starts later. If its been running for to a year then a reinstall is due backup and go for it0

If shes dropped it then its almost certainly hardware related. Its possible that when she dropped it the hard drive wrote an error into the xp system somewhere but thats unlikely to make your computer 'slow'.
By all means if you wish to give it a go then you need to put the disc in BEFORE bootup (Going into bios to set the cd drive as the primary boot up) and take it from there. But be warned, some drivers (software needed for the computer to run) CAN be a nightmare to find sometimes (Ive set up loads of computers in my time):idea:0 -
The laptop is running really fast now, dd found the discs and after refomatting the hard drive WINDOWS XP was reloaded. She is back on line too.
We are now in the process of putting on the essential programmes. Thanks for all your help.:hello:0
