Surely this is illegal? Shall we call the ASA?

Not illegal I'm afraid, but incredibly sneaky

Us money saving experts on here have read the changes to the T&Cs but how many other customers will just file the letter in the bin, then get a shock when they get a £10 charge after 6 months of not using the card ??

These card providers still have a long way to go in regulatory terms before they are as transparent as they should be.

From the new Terms & Conditions :

"You should not make payments that place the Account in credit. If you do, we may restrict the use of the Card and the Account to the amount of your credit limit"

Thats all I know, hope it makes sense.

I am not as clued up on credit cards as some here but that quote was as clear as mud.

I go in credit and they hold me to my credit limit?

    So what changed.

I am often in credit on two cards at the beginning of the month then later it will be a negative ballance, I know we are going to use £50 of petrol on my ASDA card and have a standing order to put that amount in at the begining of the month then later I pay off the total in full.

It means that if you have a credit limit of £1,000 and a positive balance of £500, they would block an attempted purchase of £1,100 as it is larger that your credit limit.

They have also added a clarification (point 5.1) that

"...the introductory period on balance transfers commences from the date the account is opened. This change will only apply to you if this is your first Card with us...."

There was a disagreement about this issue on a previous thread when two Abbey staff members were quoting different things - one said it was as stated above and the other said it was backdated to the 1st of the month that the account was opened (which was also what I was told over the phone by Abbey). I complained at the time that this would mean that I only had 5 months zero interest by the time by balance transfer took effect.

I am pleased to say that on my statment that I got this morning, it now states "Interest 0.000% to 2008-12-26" Which in my case is indeed 6 months from the opening of the account.

At least that point has been cleared up in our favour for a change!
  • We have just been informed on that as well, although that doesn't apply to Organic, Staff or Priority cards as far as I know.

Does anyone know which address should be used to cancellations as they dont seem to mention it in the new T&C booklet.
It's the usual Customer Services number 0845 602 1582. Must admit there have been a few people calling up regarding the Zero charges and wanting to close their account now.

From what I've been told, it's if you don't make a purchase for 6 months that you get a fee. Payments don't come into it. So remember to get the weekly shopping for example every few months to keep in line. Of course if I hear more I'll let everyone know.

And regarding the credit, this is only for pre-loading the card. A genuine oversight like a slight overpayment etc isn't a problem.

Another 0845 number !! Come on Hamilton stop quoting these expensive numbers at least give the 0800 freephone numbers which Abbey have sooo many of.;)

Here's a couple to start you off 0800 5872758 or 0800 0683562 which will get ALL banking/card services.

Where does it states "Interest 0.000% to 2008-12-26", I got my statement yesterday and it just have "Purchases: 0.000%" and no date?

    Also it states:

    Fees: No annual fees.

and I haven't received the change in t&C letter (as yet).

    Thanks

All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

    That's because I/we honestly don't use/have them.

Usually on the Abbey card statements it doesn't specify the 0% deadline for purchases.

Technically there is no annual fee. Use of the card, even sporadically but all year round will avoid the charge.

My first statement did not include this date, but later statements did.
