I've been using Gumtree for a few months now to shift a variety of stuff since I got rid of my eBay account and so far I've had no bother. I certainly doubt you'll find the infestation of idiots and scammers that eBay 'enjoys' anyway!0 -
I'm a keen eBayer and i do understand why many people get fed up with them as they do seem to make lots of changes all the time. But in my experience eBay is the only site that has ever produced reliable sales in a volume that makes my time worth spending. I have tried many other sites and, although the fees look very tempting, I find you can't ever get close to making the same level of sales as you will on eBay.
Over the years I have learned to sell what makes money rather than try and outsell other people and lose money. What i mean is I have found ways of selling fairly unique things that aren't run of the mill retail items for which you will almost certainly have to compete (undercut) hundreds or thousands of other people to get a sale.
I think this article explains what I mean far better than I can say it ~

As the writer says there, i produce items for negligible cost other than time which means I earn a big mark up which makes the eBay and paypal fees easily affordable. It took me a few years to see the error of my ways, get the right idea and finally learn what I was good at but it has certainly been worth it.
I agree that everyone has something within them that can make them a good living if they think about it, check it thoroughly and work at it.

Do a bit of research before committing to ebay fees, see how much similar items go for and gauge on whether its worth it for you or not. The fees have dropped when you list an item but once sold ebay takes a larger fee. This works out better (i find) if i have lots of things that dont sell.
Good luck! Kath0 -
Have you tried listing your collection-only items on Craigslist? It's FREE and you can list items as £150 or near offer, etc. No need to offer or accept PayPal as most transactions are simple cash on collection. For valuable items you can always agree to meet at a branch of your local bank and have the buyer pay in the cash on the spot, or ask a local rugby club forward to accompany you..."Money is truthful. If a person speaks of their honour, make sure they pay in cash."0
