Is WiFi The Same as Wireless Network?

I mean I have heard with WiFi you can go to 'hotspots' and get on the internet....but is this different from having a laptop where you don't have wires to your BT box?.....ummm or is it the same thing?

Same thing. You can use a wireless-enabled laptop to connect to a wireless network whether it's a hotspot or in your house.

WiFi is a proprietary brand. Its like saying is Hoovering the same as vacuum cleaning? Some people prefer to the term "wireless", but its more accurate to refer to it as 802.11, because with the term "wireless broadband" many people confuse 802.11 with 802.16 standards.

Yes but the Wi-Fi "brand" is owned by the Wi-Fi alliance which is a consortium of companies who make wireless networking equipment so it's not owned by one company. So effectively Wi-Fi is a standard as any Wi-Fi certified device should connect to any other anywhere in the world.
