40p per mile is the maximum HMRC will allow your employer to pay you free of tax & NI.

40p for the first 10,000 miles then it drops to 22p (or is it 22p?) thereafter. per annum.
Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!

There are three types of people in the world, those who can add up and those who can't.
  • The HMRC rates are ancient, completely out of date for modern motoring. In reality they should be about 70p and 40p respectively.

    Then 25p
From the horses mouth so to speak:

It used to be based on engine size, I think it was about 5 years ago it went to flat rate 40p / 25p regardless of engine or emissions.
Clearly HMRC expect a working mother with 2 children to be able to carry work kit and pushchairs in a car small enough to fit inside a 40p per mile budget. Idiots.

I can't remember when 28p a mile was the mileage rate. Mine is currently almost twice this and due to fuel increases there is a request for this to be uplifted. At 28p you are providing subsidised transport for your employer, why should you? Do they ask you to pay rent on your desk and chair too?
