accidential cover on electrical appliances

My washing machine is 7 months old and I have been told it is not covered under the man fact warrenty. A pound coin got behind the drum and cracked it. I was told to check my household ins incase I am covered but I am not.
Can anyone tell me the best place to go for appliance covers apart from the company where I bought my machine. Comet. I need to buy a new one, but want to get some cover first.
I tried ringing my insurance company about upgrading my cover but they will not give me a quote as it is not in my name. British gas complete cover to include this service is very expensive. And everyone knows what comet charge for 5 years cover for one item.

I know checking the pockets in future will save me a lot of money.

Any advice please
Julie

your washing machine will be covered by 1 years manufacture warranty for breakdown but not againgst accidental damage by you. Even if you took out the 5 yar cover with comet it would not cover for this damage. Only breakown. The best thing i can suggest is try and get a quote from an independant electrician to see how much replacing the drum would cost. Its got to be cheaper than a new washing machine. Please dont waste your money on 5 year warranties. they are really not worth the paper they are written on. The best thing to do is put £20 a month away in savings account and forget about it until the day your machine may break down. If it doesnt within 5 years you will have in your bank account 60 x £20 = £1,2000 simple but true

I have been thinking about doing that. These companies charge extortinate amounts for cover.
The comet man said a new drum would cost 150 plus approx 2 hours work to fit. making total cost nearly 300

    Thanks

Hi Julie, The Comet man would be quoting comet prices for repairs..
There will be washing machine repair people locally who will be probably a third of the what Comet would charge for a repair.

Try them first, they will often give you a free quote,
just out of curiosity who told you it was a cracked drum. I have had this sort of thing happen to me in the past and yes it a coin but it had lodged in the pump so the pump wouldnt work as it was jammed by the coin. It was only an hours labour I had to pay. I watched the man
do the job and yes it did happen again when i got complacnt and my oh and me did the job of removing the coin ourselves next time.

i feel for you, its just so annoying, i get the imp that you are a young couple and learning along the way pity we have to learn through our pockets.

It was the comet repair man who told me it was the drum that was cracked in 2 places.

I bought my washer dryer from Sainsbury's online. at the time they were offering cover for 3.99 per month which i now pay. I can't remember what it actually covers but you could call them to find out more... i'm going to check tonight to see if it covers accidental damage!!!

If as now you know for certian what is wrong possbily some local repair people would be able to quote you over the phone.

Greenr, i can almost guarantee that your £3.99 will only cover for breakdown.

£3.99 for breakdown comes out at £239.40 for five years. Not many machines break down during that time. They are usually built to last these days.

Catch 22 situation. You hope you never use the service but at the end you dont want to think you've wasted your money. I guess thats insurance for you.
    its all a guessing game.

Just got the paperwork out for my 3.99 cover and it DOES include accidental damage -YEY!!!!! It's called the Sainsburys Worryfree Plan and is through Domestic and General. Monthly payments of 3.99 which i can cancel any time as no tie in period...

made me laugh!! sorry but this is totally inaccurate, average lifespan of a washing machine before needing repair is approx 3years. washing machines are not built to last these days, they are built to be cheap, except miele.listen to customers in comet/currys etc, they ask what are your cheapest??? not what are your best???

i can only go by my own experience. i have been married 40 years and have had my present machine for eight years, and only 2 machines before that with only 1 repair, guess i have just been lucky.

thanks for the info greenr, will look at that when i renew my washer/dishwasher.

I am sure that I have read somewhere that there are companies who sell warrantry's and they are much cheaper than those that the big retailers try to get you to buy. Sorry that I cannot be more specific, but I expect the information is out there somewhere.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
