What does a surveyor do?

Hello, I live in a rented flat which we hope to move out of shortly. My LA rang to say a surveyor is coming tomorrow to survey the flat.

a) does this mean the LL are selling it.
b) will I have to tidy up as I have a load of my kids stuff everywhere and will not be able to sort it all out by tomorrow?
c) how long does it normally take to do a survey (we live in a 2 bed flat) as I don't want to stay in all day for him/her.

Thanks.

hehe they've done very little since about February according to their institute.
Can't be of any help though, i wouldn't bother tidying up but i'm sure you could ask the surveyor when he/she arrives points b and c.

    Hiya

I work for a firm of surveyors. It could be to do with selling the property, or it could be to do with a dispute or something with neighbours, or some works that are being carried out.

They will probably to an internal survey and possibly and external one. Shouldnt take more than an hour im guessing?

You dont need to tidy up as they are only really interested in the actualy building.

    Hope this helps.

They can do drive by surveying. This often involves staying at their desk with a mug of tea and two digestives.

I wouldn't tidy up. But I would point out every item of poor repair in the place.

If the date and time are inconvenient for you then suggest that the LA rearranges the appointment.

Ask the LA/LL if they are planning on putting the property on the market.
However, the LL could simply be trying to remortgage if their fixed rate has ended..

It's your home, don't tidy up unless *you* want to
  • This happened to us at the start of out tenancy and we were worried the LL was selling, but it turned out they were just remortgaging - could it be this?
