Advice please about electricity supplier

Hi
I am asking on behalf of a friend (yes, I know they all say that!) who knows I am a moneysaving-follower. It is a bit unusual and they want to remain anonymous for now so apologies for the cryptic references.

He used to get his electric supply from A. About 18 months ago he received a letter from supplier A saying sorry to hear he was moving to supplier B. As he had not asked to be switched he called A to ask what it was all about. A said they could not stop it going ahead and he would now have to take it up with B.

He called B saying he had not asked for a transfer why had this happened. B said they had no record of a switch so could not help him. After several calls between A then back to B, he confirmed with each of them that they would not be sending him a bill as he was not (now) their customer.

He decided to wait for the next bill to arrive then take it up then. Some 18 months later no bill has arrived but the electric is still on. Great you might think, free electric. Being a realist however he knows that one day he will get a huge bill for the electric he has used.

He is a bit worried now that the bill is going to be enormous and they will charge him top whack (plus interest?). Normally he would have been going to the cheapest supplier and capping when I (ie Martin) told him to.

What should he do to find out who is supplying him? How does he get a bill at a reasonable rate instead of a punitive one? How can he sign up for a good capped rate when he does not know who he is moving from?

Any ideas?

Many thanks

  • Any supplier should be able to search on a system called ecoes to find out who the supplier is. Having the meter serial number handy would be a good idea when he calls. On his previous bills there should also be a long number that begins with 2 digits in the range 10-25, that would also be a handy number to have ready.

He shouldn't get charged interest and as you suggest it's best to get it sorted sooner rather than later.
