Horrible Landlords

Our last rented house looked very good on the outside but once we moved in things started going wrong. At one point we nad no proper hot water no cooker (it had blown up)/washing machine and the electricity was faulty.

We had numerous tradesmen round and one of them said there was a nail!! in the cable which connects the cooker. The landlord refused to sort it out and after two months still not everything was right so I refused to pay my rent. Can you do this? Can I get compensation? In my opinion the house was dangerous and when I talked to the landlord he threatened to come round and 'sort me out'. The agent was useless and was scared of the landlord!!

thanks

  • I was in a similar situation. Shelter should be able to help you! Try contacting your local office. They arranged letters and even helped me get a solicitor.

    Hope this helps.

Are you still living at this property?
  • Move! Take your rent money elsewhere.

No got out but just really annoyed that he got all his rent for the 4 months we were there and we didn't really have a 'proper' house! And actually it was dangerous but nor he nor the agent seemed to care....

The property sounds appalling but the time to take proper action was whilst you were there. If you really want to do something about it write to the local Council's Private Sector Rentals Team and say that you'd like to bring this LL to their attention

Hope you've got somewhere better to live now and can use the experience to avoid a similar scenario anywhere else..
