Can I have Isofix fittings put in my car?

Options
I have got a Y reg Zafira that according to parkers does not have Isofix fittings. Until today I have never heard of Isofix but it could really solve a problem with our car seats.

Is it possible to have these fixings installed to a car? I really know nothing about them but was wondering if anyone had any ideas

Cheers

Barrie

  • As far as I know, it is not possible to retrofit ISOFIX attachments. These attachments are part of the "structure" of the car and so unless you are handy with a welding torch it is not possible to have them retrofitted.

ISOFIX according to some, is not as good as it is made out to be. Not all seats support it, so you may be limited to certain makes and models.

Not technically true but its very limiting. There are a lots of ISOFIX seats available, and more with retro ISOFIX adapters, but as far as I know you do have to have the bar built into the bodywork for the ISOFIX fittings to connect to. There may be a retro fit out there but ive not heard of it?!

That and the fact that our existing car seats move around like mad in the middle row of seats. When we use the rear seats we are ok because we can put a locking thingy on the seat belt below the loop it comes from. Not a good explanation I know.

Basically the seat belt in the middle seats come direct from the car "wall", a sort of closed unit. In the rear they go in and out of the "wall". We can put the locking thing just beneath where it goes into the wall to stop any further seat belt being released

I doubt its possible on a Y reg but such things do exist to some extent so it may be worth asking the part dept at a dealer. I had an older Volvo S60 some time ago that was only 'isofix ready' I found I could get a kit from the dealer (cost about £11) it was a big metal bar with the isofix hoops on and some new bolts - easy to fit myself down back of seat cushion but needed a torque wrench. Hey presto! isofix equipped car. I am a strong supporter of isofix, if anyone wants proof just how good it is, check out the euro ncap crash test results on their site http://www.euroncap.com/tests.aspx. Most car manufacturers supply an isofix seat with their cars for the testing as they know it ensures the BEST possible safety score.

    Hello Barrie.
I'm having the very same problem with my year 2000 car.
I need to fit a child-seat on the central rear seat (the central seat has both the lap and the shoulder belt).

Did you manage to get the ISOFIX junction points fitted into your car?

Or have you douns any workaround?
    Thanks.

  • join a forum relevant to the car, chances are you can probably get something from a scrap yard for a few quid and just bolt it on (if the newer models came with it of course)
  • It is not just the newer models that come with it. Different variants of older models also do. It is just unfortunate that my variant doesn't

Isofix seats are not 100% universal. They are only tested to fit the vehicles on the manufacturers list. Some also require top tethers or seat pads. Also the majority of cars only have Isofix on the outer seats.
