Briwax leaving streaks-what do I do ??

After sanding down a cabinet back to bare pine, I started with the briwax. It's briwax with a brown colour. The intention is to give an aged pine look. But sometimes the wax is just colouring lightly ( right ? ) then suddenly there's a heavy brown streak, presumerably where the bit of wax has a high concentration of colour. After one coat the cabinet looks a bit zebra-ish. How do I avoid this happening ???

Thanks

  • Hi,

I had this problem when first using Briwax. What I found was that the streaks tended to occur where the wax was applied thickest. I found that with time some of the streaking faded away as the spirit in the wax - the stuff you can smell when applying it - dried out of the wood. Where the streaking didn't fade I found that if you give the whole piece a good thick coat of the wax again, applied very evenly, you basically end up with the same darker shade all over, as the wood literally absorbs as much wax as it can and any residual wax can be polished away. For even more consistent results warm the tin, so that the wax liquifies before application, but do not do this near a naked flame
    as the wax is flammable.
