Donating computers...

I take quite a lot of old IT stock away from customers who are going to throw it in the bin when they upgrade.

Such things as laptops and computers. They are all fully working and while i sometimes sell it on i would prefer to donate it to charity. What charities are out there that would take such things?

Probably not ideal, but here are a couple of ideas.

You could post your excess kit on FREECYCLE, which does exactly what it says on the tin. Individuals post OFFER & WANTED items, in the hope that someone will be able tp PROVIDE or ACCEPT. The link that I provided should take you to a listing of all available user groups. There are plenty in Ireland, but not Newry-specific.

You should be able to pick up some useful causes within the Freecycle environment. I offered a PC, which was accepted by a Gent who told me that he used them for teaching disadvantaged kids in his own time. So, I spoke to a few friends and found him another 10.

Another way of searching for local good causes, is to look at the
Awards For All website. It offers Lottery donations, up to about £5k, to good causes. If you search the Awards database for "Newry", you'll see the sort of groups that have benefitted, and what they have used the money for. They, too, may be able to use your surplus items.

Keep up the good work. :T
  • You have PM (I don't advertise which charity I work for on the board, usually!)

Otherwise, Computers for Charities if the computers are reasonably modern............ :D
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

I am not having a good night tonight, because having started to post I then shut down the window with my reply in!

Anyway, it might also be worth asking on the NI board if anyone there knows of any charities who will 'recycle' computers for charities. And there is a company near us, don't know if they are purely local or not but they have a shop on E-bay, but it's another thing I cannot remember the name of! I apologise if my geography has misplaced you: even if you are further south I still think the NI board is the place to ask because at least there's no ferry involved ...

From the sticky post I started on generally useful sites you could contact InKind Direct - I know they pass stuff on to NI but don't know if they will collect from over the water - and IT for Charities if it's still going.
Signature removed for peace of mind
