Flat rent scam

  • There is little you can do, I'm afraid. Neither WU nor the police in either this country or Italy can do to help you - the perprator is in Nigeria, and is untraceable. Never, ever, send money via WU or any other money transfer system to someone you have never met.

I don't fully understand this. Why would the crook be in Nigeria, considering money where sent and picked up here in the UK?

They are guessing, but this type of fraud is run on an industrial scale in Nigeria. See http://www.scamorama.com for examples where people try to string the fraudsters along for as long as possible.

There are large numbers of variations of this type of scam but if somebody asks you to:
    1) make a payment up front
    2) send the money by Western Union
then alarm bells should be ringing.

Money sent via WU can be picked up anywhere in the world there is a WU agent.

  • This is such a horrible scam.

We do WU at my workplace and I've seen so many people be scammed by this.

We've not paid out to the scammers, only sent the money. I had a lady this week who lost £1800, just wish she'd told us what she was sending the money for in the first palce and we could of stopped her.
