Help with broken tap

I am no DIY expert so please bare with me.
The tap on the Bath does not work, now I'm pretty sure its a plastic insert in the tap that needs replacing.
I took the decorative top off the tap, I unscrewed the screw and took the tap off. There is a plastic piece that sits in the top of the tap, now it fits snuggly into the tap so I can only assume that the thread on the inside of this plastic piece is shot. Does anyone know what this would be called and where I could get a replacement.

A photo would say soooo much more.;)
    Depending on the tap.....
You might have to strip down the whole headworks, clean and reassemble with silicon grease, as well as replacing any broken parts.

I here what your saying but I can't get a photo at the moment.
Stripped it down completely these are the bits.

    One onyx looking tap head.
One removable plate (hides the screw)
Screw that holds the head on.
Serated bush type thing (that I think is the offending object) that fits snugly into a serated part inside the tap head.
This bush goes over the thread that protrudes from the actual bath fixing and I think the thread has gone so it isn't turning the tap.
