Do you need any advanced features such as ASP, PHP, MySQL database etc., or will it just be a static site with HTML pages? Do you need web space or is it just the domain name you are after? (If it is just the domain name, you would need space to store your site elsewhere)
If you want good reliable hosting, try 1&1 Internet. For a package with webspace fully included, FTP Account but only for HTML static pages (no PHP or other server side scripts) then try 1&1's Instant Website package: http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/InstantWebsite;jsessionid=58A0E91A97D7D96568794ACBD2B75325.TC33a?__frame=_top&__lf=Static
Or, if you require PHP support, try their 1&1 Home package: http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/HostingHome;jsessionid=58A0E91A97D7D96568794ACBD2B75325.TC33a?__frame=_top&__lf=Static
Anyway, if you decide to use one of those packages, simply click the Sign up button, Continue, pick whether you want the free software, then continue again and that is where you would enter your domain name.0 -

I would agree with 1and1, i started with a free hosting service from Freeola when i bought my first domain but as i wanted to develop it and add certain features, freeola simply wasn't up to it. They also had a lot of problems with their mail server being down (which is no good for a business) They are currently doing a special offer at £7.19 a month.
Register, buy the domain you want through them, very easy to follow and some nice features included. You may even find you can use their free software to creat your first website.0 -
Yep, thirded with 1and1, I found their prices pretty good as well.

Register the domain & rent a "standard virtual" linux server from https://www.easily.co.uk - it will be cheapish and straightforward to link your domain with your space. You ought to have an option where the virtual location of the page really is the domain itself. Easily offers a smooth upgrade path if you need more featues (see their pachage comparer chart at http://easily.co.uk/index.php3?exe=comptable).
You do not want a page which when right-clicked to see where it's hosted looks like:
"http://basic1.easily.co.uk/00D018/1234525/" that the Starter packages offer you.
Rather you want one that looks like:
"http://www.mydomainname.net/" (standard virtual server as mentioned)
This will assist you to get indexed in Google etc and to always have the same location from search engines' viewpoints in the future.
Once set up, your big challenge will be getting web page visitors - I suggest you learn a bit about search engine optimization before creating your main page and install stats from Statcounter.
Don't worry I'm not connected to Easily, just a reasonably happy punter up till now.0 -
I can highly recommend http://www.reddiweb.com/ as a hosting company. I use them for a large website and a smaller one. They are extremely reliable and friendly and I have had exceptional service from them.3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

What a sweeping statement, in what way are they "crap"?
They are a large organisation, offer good value for money and excellent customer service..... seems pretty good to me.0 -
I have been using 1and1 for years now and have never had a problem. The setup is very easy, they have a great Control Panel and their prices are great as well.digp wrote:take a peek at https://www.webhostingtalk.com and steer clear of 1and1 and the like as they are crap
With this in mind, I agree with Neiliboy:Neiliboy wrote:My business website is with 1&1.....cant fault it...:)
