New to the system - trying to calculate what we would get.

We have recently relocated from the Isle of Man with my work.

Hubby isn't working at the moment and has applied for Job seekers allowance - altho nothing through as yet as they say he hasnt paid enough NI in 2006 - 2007 (????)

Have 2 children Have applied for CB here but no news as yet.

My salary for full time work is £19k. Childcare is working out at £170 per week at the moment.

We are in rented accom while we look for a house. (£750 per month)

We obv were both in employment up to April 2008 (as this seems to be a key question and effects the benefits) and we earned approx £40000 between us.

Starting to get a bit frantic as only me working at the moment and no CB or Job seekers as yet.

Have filled in a form for tax credit - but not sure if there is another one for working tax credit or child tax credit.

Any ideas what we might get? or what else to do?

If your husband isn't working at the moment, surely he could look after the children, at least for part of the week? (Apologies if he already is!). That would cut down on the childcare costs, which even in the short term, would save some money.

If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.
  • He is travelling back & forth to the IOM at the moment and looking for a job. He looks after the baby 1 day a week and picks up my son from school twice a week!

I take it there is a reason for him continually travelling, can he not cut back on this as this obviously wont be cheap?
I think seeing that your childcare is quite high that you would be better trying to get hubby to look after them although there is the worry that you will lose their place which you will need once hubby gets a job.

I don't think you should assume hubby will be entitled to JSA as if he hasn't made enough contributions then he wont be eligible for contributions based and your earnings will be too high for him to receive income based JSA.

Have you been onto www.entitledto.co.uk to see what tax credits you should get, also to check if you will be entitled to any LHA (new name for housing benefit).

Also it is only 1 form for both CTC and WTC. As part of a couple one of you has to be working over 30 hours and the other working over 16 hours to qualify for help with childcare costs, could your husband not get a part time job whilst he is seeking full time so you can qualify?
