The Best Student Discount Cards?

I was wondering which student discount cards are available and if there is one you'd recommend?

Not strictly a student card but the bite card (http://www.bitecard.co.uk/) is useful for those of us that travel by rail to uni. Saves 20% in certain food places. There is a full list on the website. Also its free.

also at the moment get coffee/tea/hot choc one of free when you make a purchase at these railways places:

upper crust
cambden food co
cafe ritazza
pumpkin vafe

Let's have a look.. uh, in my purse right now I have the bite card mentioned above, a card for HMV which is bloody fantastic, a waterstones card and a Boots card.

I've also got my trusty Shakeaholics card and my Trills survival card, if you live in Newcastle ;]

Otherwise, I'd say get well connected on FaceBook, I've seen some discount card offers there, and look out for Snapfax cards being handed out in the city for students around September/October time.. or, if you have three quid spare, check their website- I got loads of snapfax freebies and discounts XD

NUS card all the way, almost every high street shop that gives discount want to see the NUS logo to give discount.

I suggest wait til you get to uni because my uni card has the NUS logo on it and i can get discount in most places,however a few dont accept it because it doesnt have an expirery date.

Its also worth noting that Zavvi(previously virgin megastore),HMV & Game all give discount if you apply for a free discount card,its worth sking about.

This 'NUS for a discount' thing isn't always true. I'm at a non-NUS uni (Glasgow) and have never had problems using my student card for discounts, in Scotland and England.

Plus, in loads of shops ask if they do a discount. If you don't ask, you don't get!

Good point.. I'd say wait 'till you have your student card anyways.. I went to Newcastle College for my A Levels, and it had the NUS logo on the back, so it worked anyways. So sit tight in case it's the same with your uni, if you're gonna get one!

I wouldn't say the NUS card is worth it. It was, when it cost £1, but paying a tenner for it is ridiculous. Most places will usually just take your uni ID anyway.

The HMV card is worth getting.
And if you live near any Scream bars, get a Yellowcard. Costs £1 & gives you 20 - 30p off most drinks, so is good to have.

Been told that the HMV discount card is only issued in the megastores in London, Birmingham etc. Anyone managed to get one from just a local store?

My local is Preston, & they said it'll be in all stores, but the bigger stores will have more. They said last year Preston got about 5000 but a lot of the issued ones weren't used because people lost them etc, so this year Preston is only getting about 500 or something, so if I can't get one there I have to go to a bigger one, & they reckon the nearest one is Lancaster.
Should be out week beginning 15th Sept, I think they said it would be.

HMV are no longer working with NUS. The only way to get a discount is to have a card from HMV. At the moment there is none available until the next academic year, which according to HMV has not started yet.
