Internal Uk Flights

Sorry if this has been answered before.
My niece wishes to take her gran(my mother in law) down to London for a treat for a few days.
The problem is my MIL does not have current UK passport,it is well past it's expiry date(she is 71).
Is it a requirement that she must have photographic ID for an internal flight within the UK,if so,is there any other form of ID acceptable.
This may seem a basic question, but having never been in this situation all advice is welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Cheers bob.
As i thought she is up a creek without a paddle, does not drive, has no current passport. The cost of a passport for 1 return trip will be dearer than the flight price.
Looks like a long drive via car from Ayrshire to London and back.0 -
What about the train as an alternative?0

Surely she could get a citizen card?
And don't airlines accept pension books?
However, an advance purchase first class ticket could cost less than even a "cheap" air ticket, and most people enjoy the experience of first class rail travel.0 -
I don't think non budget airlines (BA for example), require photo id for internal flights.

Thanks folks.
Some good suggestions there.I will pass it all on to both parties and they can take it from here.0 -
For travel with any airline on domestic flights you do need to have photo ID either a passport or a driving licence is accepted:j Debt free since 31/01/08:j

BA seem to accept one of their Executive Club cards instead of photo ID. I don't think there's any charge to sign up, so that might be an option. The other airlines I looked up (Easyjet, BMI, Ryanair) all insist on photo ID.0

I've checked in online or at a self service kiosk with BA and then been asked for photo ID at the gate. I have a BA Executive club card but have still been asked for photo ID, so it's not guaranteed that you won't be asked:j Debt free since 31/01/08:j

I have always used a student card for flights between England and Scotland. I'm sure that she could find something. Perhaps she could sign up for some course in order to get the card?0
