Silly Combi Boiler CH question

Sorry to bother with a silly question!
Just moved into a house with combi-boiler (never seen one before!).
Nice to have hot water all time and CH works a treat.

Now winter is about to set in, I was wondering what is the most effecient use of the boiler for CH?

Currently it is timed to come on for a couple of hours in am and from 4pm to 11pm. There is a variable thermostat in the living room.

Would it be more effecient (cheaper!) to keep CH on constantly and vary the temperature with thermostat?

Thanks

Depends how cold it is and who's home! Ours comes on 6.30 - 8 in the morning and if we're all gone by 8.30 stays off until 5.30 when we're all in. If it's cold it goes on earlier when youngest gets in from school.

Weekends or when someone is here all day is usually the same but put on for an hour when necessary. That's for now and spring but when it's very cold and we're here all day, we leave it on all day but turn it down to about 18degrees when we're all busy and turn it up as evening approaches.

    Does that make sense?

That's what I always used to do. Leave it on constant, turn the thermostat down to 15 degrees when you leave for work then up to 20 when you get in. I never used to turn it down too low because the thermo lets it drop a bit colder than that before switching in. If you set it to 12 it might not kick in till 10 degrees or so.

If you do that you effectively lose the timer facility of course.
