I was advised by the National Debtline that as Severn Trent is my water provider I could apply to them for my bankruptcy fees. I've had the forms come and now been told that been advised by this respected charity to go bankrupt isn't enough, I have to go to the CAB, which with a 7 week old baby isn't easy. Has anyone been succesful with getting them to pay fees or would I be better off just waiting longer and saving the money?

Can i ask who actually told you this?
There is no harm in trying. You won't know unless you try. We have had several posters who have had their bc fees paid by various utilities or charity organisations.DFree impartial debt advice available from: National Debtline - Tel: 0808 808 4000 | The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) - Tel: 0800 138 1111 | Find your local Citizens Advice Bureau

I know that Severn Trent have a hardship grant that people can apply for. Someone very dear to us has applied recently.

NDL is a debt charity so that fine, providing they have reccomended bc for your circumstances.
Are you saying that no one has actually said that bc is your best option?Free impartial debt advice available from: National Debtline - Tel: 0808 808 4000 | The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) - Tel: 0800 138 1111 | Find your local Citizens Advice Bureau

The only reason i ask is that one of the things a judge will refuse a bc petition for is that the person has not sought the correct legal advice. If you fill in the severn trent forms give them you ref number that NDL will have given you with the name of your advisor they can then confirm it if they want. I actually queried this point on behalf of someone, and thought it best to clarify the point, there is no legal requirement to take advice from anyone before going bankrupt and the judge would not refuse an order for this reason.
It might be best practice to do so(and a little stupid not to), but taking advice isn't a legal requirement prior to petitioning for bankruptcy.
The judge will make the order on the evidence in front of him ie. whether the person presenting their petition is insolvent or not.====0 -
we've had a form through for anglian water regarding their hardship fund. This was send directly from NDL and has a covering letter from them confirming they have advised bankruptcy have you received anything like this?0

Ok well if that is the case why does the judge ask 9 times out of 10 if you have sought legal advise and why have we had a poster on here that was refused bc and told to petition again once he had sought that advice!
No one said it was a "legal" requirement. We just know from experience that it is the one question the judge nearly always asks, along with "are you aware of the implications of bc?".
Just for your info i was asked by the OR and he also asked the name of the advisor and company which advised me to go bc.Free impartial debt advice available from: National Debtline - Tel: 0808 808 4000 | The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) - Tel: 0800 138 1111 | Find your local Citizens Advice Bureau
