overpayment child tax credit

my husband and i had joint claim then he went away so i had to claim single claim so when he came home 5th august 2005 i had to phone round let everyone no well apparently i never phoned tax credits so when i renewed in april 2006 they told me they never had information husband was back so i told them. but i was on income support then when he came home jsa so it worked out payments where same so i never owed them they never owed me.

so it feb 2008 i get letter saying i owe a £1000 as i claimed as single person and never informed them i was joint claim, so appealed explaining and that i understand i should have informed them and thought i had, but payments would have been same, but then i get letter stating that appeal was denied and although they understand i was still not suppose to get it as a single claim they want it bk, so just because their computer says single not joint i owe them £1000. i have a son under the hospital and could do with out the stress , even if i had £1000 to give them that means i never recieved tax credits for period of august 2005-april 2006.

if i was to not tell them on purpose then surley i would have done it if i got more money , ut money was same and i genuinly never relised i hadnt told them.

just wanted to know anyone have any suggestions on what to do next??
