sash windows

Have just been quoted £500 a window for replacement sash windows (including taking out the old and putting in the new) £450 per window construction and £50 per window fitting etc. Is this a good deal as they will all be hand made to fit and from a local joiner (far west cornwall)(not very moneysaving but want to keep it local and ms if possible).
the only other problem is not available until end of Jan but think its a general problem as i think its a niche industry and they are all very busy at the moment.
oh sorry total cost is £4000 for 8 windows approximatley 800mm x 500m

where abouts in west Cornwall is it?? £50 for fiting etc seems reasonable, but the build cost seems high - is it a carpenter or a window company?? there are specialist in replacing and restoring sash windows around the place - I used a company from London but they travelled to Plymouth to measure and quote, then came back with the new frames and restored the others in a couple of days. Might not save you much by going national but £50 a frame adds up to £400 overall

Hi, I would like 2 new sash windows for the front of my house and I live in Herts (35 miles north of London). You couldn't tell me the name of the firm you used in London could you please? They sound very reasonable. Also were these windows of the double glazed variety?

    Thank you

That is a very reasonable cost, although you need to look into how they are being formed, which timber, how the timber is being treated etc as of course cheap softwood will cost less than better quality.

Generally I allow approx £700 per sash window in my cost plans.

Double glazed sash will cost substantially more, and be aware that any double glazed sash will have a larger, timber section than single glazed. If your house is listed then you will need to check with them that they will allow D/G as replacements as often they dont and also check if there is enough depth to allow for the new box as again the D/G boxes are generally a larger size.

More and more companies are now providing D/G so I dont think you will have a problem finding a company
