Switching problems

After I heard Martin shouting 'Switch, Switch, Switch' a few weeks ago, I was straight onto the site & managed to get onto Scottish Power's dual gas & electricity fixed rate tariff before it was withdrawn a few hours later. I was congratulating myself & everything seemed to be ok until last week when I received a letter from them telling me that my electricity meter wasn't compatible with their pricing arrangements. I think I have an off peak meter but I'm not sure. I assumed the deal was off but now Scottish Power have sent me an email telling me to read the gas meter prior to switching to them.

My questions....... Should I still switch the gas to SP & go elsewhere just for elec? Can I now opt out of the SP arrangement since it is not what I signed up for? Is it cheaper to get gas & elec from the same provider? How can I find out which supplier can cope with my meter?

Many Thanks

  • Hmm it may be that you have a restricted hour tariff, whereby you get cheaper electricity at certain times of the day, which means it has it's own tariff.

You could argue the toss that it isn't what you signed up for and they could treat the transfer as an erroneous one and return it to your previous supplier.

It is cheaper, generally, to have your fuels with the same supplier as they'll usually give you a discount.

You need to find out what type of meter you have and how many rates it has. Check the latest bill you have from your current supplier and check a) the supply numbers for your property, b) the meter serial number (if there's more than one, you will need a special tariff) and c) check the tariff/product you are currently on with your supplier at the moment.

If you don't have these details, call your current supplier and ask them for them.
