recommend a carpet cleaner please?

Well, I have lovely cream carpets in the house. (I hasten to add they were there when we moved in and as thye were brand new it wasn't mse to replace them!!!) ....Except that after a few spills here and there it's become obvious that the old spot cleaner isn't working, oh and hubbie doesn't seem to realise that you should wipe up a spill when it happens not just tell me about it the next morning!. I can only see this getting worse once we are blessed with the bump's arrival in January.

I am thinking of buying a carpet cleaner to keep on top of the stains and do the carpets regularly. My experience of having carpets cleaned with a rented appliance hasn't bee good - lots of money for not many results. So was thinking about buying something like a VAX or a BISSEL, but then wondered if a steam cleaner would be any use as it could be used on windows etc as well???

What are your expereinces and what recommendations do you have??????

I hire the very large Karacher, its a bit like a trough with wheels and hose attachments. I usually do my carpets every 6 months down on my hands and knees. I have used others but this does the job the best.

Hi i have a bissel pro heat, and it brilliant. Would highly recommend one. I too have cream carpets.
  • Hi, I've just brought a VAX carpet cleaner, link below...

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h_/202-8969145-0011051?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Vax+V-125+&x=15&y=17

Although not cheap, I brought it because the reviews on Amazon were so good. I have now cleaned all my carpets and I must say I'm mighty impressed!

When I popped into Currys to have a look before I ordered it from Amazon, the salesman mentioned that Bissel were no longer in business so Vax machines would only be available in future. It may be worth checking this if you do decide to go for a Bissel to ensure that you don't have problems with spares/serving.

I bought the Vax Deluxe cleaner from Homebase for £99.99, it was half price (they ALWAYS seem to be half price!!). We have two kids who can't hold their milk!

    Its here on Amazon.

It's good - it's quite slim too so fits in the kitchen pantry quite easily. My mum has the Bissell Pro Heat but prefer mine as it's lighter. Hers has stopped spraying out soap which I've read a couple of times on the net about the Pro Heat, although I guess they all have their weak points.

I did loads of homework on the cleaners but never looked into steam cleaners, so can't help with that one, sorry.

    Hope this helps anyway!
    Best wishes

  • Hi RMac

Have a look on HotUKDeals.com - they have the latest bargains and comments about the products.
Got myself a brilliant vacumn cleaner from there last week for £44 instead of £120+ - best one I've ever had - so I shall definately use that site again.:T

I have been meaning to go on here since 31/08/2008 to tell everyone about the bargain I got, but just checked if there was already a thread and saw this one. In case my bargain was not a bargain, I just checked www.HotUKDeals.com as above, and was delighted to find that the deal I got in a store is the EXACT same price as on there. So that reassures me I got a bargain AND proves to me you do not always have to be obliged to go online to get a deal (the sales assistant when "selling" to me said it may be cheaper online!!!! - not only must he have swallowed an honesty pill, thankfully he was wrong). Only reason I did not listen to him, was that I had to have the vaccum THAT day.
Anyhoo here is the bargain story.

The Mach 7 - VZL6017C that I fell in love with after spending over an hour in Currys and Comet, was £124 reduced from £249. I was just about to buy it, but said to Currys, I am just going to go back to Comet (again) and see how much THEY are selling it for. My mind was made up when they were selling exact same vaccum for £199!!! The stores were about 6 stores apart from each other, and my gut instinct was that there prices would be similar. How wrong was I. I feel sorry for anyone who gets it for the £199. So this shows you can save £75 in 10 minutes just by shopping around!!!

And I have used it, and it is the best vacuum I have ever ever used.

So if you need one, get it while it is on offer. :T
  • In case anyone speed reading doesn't read my rambling above, the summary is that I am VERY happy with my VAX: The Mach 7 - VZL6017C
It is only £124 in Currys at the moment, and performs so so so well, I really feel I got a bargain. So much so that I renewed my password on here, so that I could spread the news.
(£249 RRP and £199 in Comet).

I have a Bissell powerwash. It works well. I've tried the spot scrubber thingy and while it cleared up whatever I had spilt, it also showed how grubby the rest of the carpet was by leaving a clean bit. I just do the whole carpet every so often now.
  • I have another (similar) question. I have a rug that is some sort of natural material (rope ish). It can go in a large washing machine but then it terrible to dry. If drip drying it takes so long it smells musty by the time it is dry (ditto scrubbing it by hand). If I tumble dry it it becomes creased and the creases don't come out until I next need to wash it. Yes I have tried ironing it - what a laugh we had, but it still stayed creased (we tried damp ironing and ironing when dry). I tried a carpet shampooer and it sucked the rug into it! My friend and I have had lots of laughs washing and drying (and ironing it) but nothing seems to work. Would a steam cleaner work? Or a manual carpet cleaner? Or maybe a Vax is less fierce than the carpet cleaner? Helpful suggestions please.
  • :j I bought a QuickWash from Bissell a while back for a £100 or so. They are now on the Bisselldirect site at £34 (Reconditioned - which I think means refurbished) and it's pretty effective at that price.
