Hi
My son will soon be approaching the dreaded time when he can take driving lessons!
We have looked into car insurance, using the usual methods e.g putting him down as the named driver, but it still comes out as around £2000 !!!
I know if he takes the driver plus course as well this may reduce it slightly. Please has anyone got any new ideas??

Hi I know my son is a named driver on my insurance he has been driving for nearly two years. Our comes to 1500.00 cheapest I could find he pays for most of it I am not in the position to pay all of that.
Unfortuantely they seem to bump young male drivers insurance up more than girls.
Bit unfair if you ask me but there we go, I think that they assume every male young is a boy racer.
Best wishes

it will be massively affected by what car he has as well
put down a typical boy racer car e.g corsa, fiesta, saxo, clio and it'll shoot up
buy him something like a ford ka or a yaris and it'll come down.:j TTC from September 08 / BFP November 08 / EDD 22nd July 09 :jOH's debt as of Sept 08 - £15,000 / Nov 08 - £13,5000 -
Or a skoda fabia - biggest car for class 1 insurance - actually made by VW though

Also try something like bell - they do more flexible "add on" policies, and 10month NCB accelerator

try quinn direct, my daughters first insurance in her own name was £1300 and she was only 17. This was for a corsa and she now has a fiesta. She is just coming up for renewal and has earned her new claims discount for next year.TOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T0

hi,
we insured our daughter for our car at
https://www.collingwoodlearners.co.uk which offers Short Term Insurance
For Learner Drivers, might be worth a look as we found their prices
very reasonable.0 -
My brother insured a 1.0 litre Corsa (about ten years old) with Quinn at 17 for around £800 TPFT with my parents as named drivers. This year his renewal (still a learner) is £460No longer using this account for new posts from 20130

Please, don't "put him down as the named driver" if it's his own car. That's fraudulent and they won't pay out when he writes it off.Hi

Even if it's a car which is jointly used by himself and a parent, you must declare the main driver accurately.0 -
First of all the car is important. Make sure it isn't Japanese. Make sure it isn't worth much. Make sure the Insurance level is no higher than a 2. Try to get some security devices fitted.
Annual mileage - keep it very low, about 3,000. Overnight, keep it in the garage/driveway. Or at least say you do.
SD&P use only. Offer a high excess, £500 min.
His job/education location is also a major factor.
Pass plus counted as my 1st years no claims, saved me about £350, the course was only £120.
My first insurance at 18 was on a 1.1 Corsa, worth about £k, and 4 years old. Premium was £890.0 -
Currynchips Don't advise people to defraud their insurer.
By all means tell the insurer you will park the car in your garage or on your drive. But only if you are going to do so.
It might make sense (indeed almost definitely will) to put the new driver's car in the garage and leave the more expensive parent's car on the drive/street, as the discount for safe parking will make a lot more difference on the more expensive premium.0
