Has anyone ever machine washed a memory mattress topper?

I've asked on another thread but no answers as yet but my DD has wet the bed last night and I had forgotten the waterproof sheet on. The memory foam topper has taken everything in - whch is nice - but I want to know if anyone has machine washed one of these before. That is a wash with powder (bold) and spin (1600 rpm on our machine).
I can't put it on the line as rain is forcast for the next week and not around the house either as it'll start to smell - I wanted to get it washed and spun and hung over the bannister to dry that way.
However, I wanted to see if anyone else had washed one before I actually went ahead and washed it, if not then I'll do it tonight and report back. LOL!!
My policy with kids is usually 'never buy anything that will not go in the washing machine' but thought I would ask the question first. First time she has wet the bed in about 2 years and of course, it is the first time I had ever forgotten to put the waterproof sheet on after washing it!! Doh!!

Don't know about mattress toppers, but we've got a Tempur mattress and I seem to remember reading in the leaflet that came with it that it shouldn't be washed.0

Hi
You can only hand wash memory foam. (see here:http://mydeco.com/product/silentnight-memory-foam-mattress-topper-double/08ad00e5cb0d919c30a1f1c0a3e62d73874480a6/
I can see why. I would just put it in the bath for a soak, rinse then just walk over it to squeeze the water out. I know you say rain is forecast, but it's better to have a clean wet smell around the house! Do you have any foam cleaner? Don't know if you could use it, but just a suggestion!
Good luck!:happyhear We are not put on this earth for ourselves, but are placed here for each other.

By foam cleaner. I mean carpet cleaner or something similar.:happyhear We are not put on this earth for ourselves, but are placed here for each other.

I would put it in the bath and give it a thorough soak/wash/rinse then roll it up and tie it with something similar to ribbon (string is too narrow and may well cut through or damage the foam). Best to tie it top, middle and bottom.
Stand it on end in the bath for quite a while to let a lot of the water drain away and then stick it in the machine for a spin.
(Been there)

Whatever you do, don't put it in the washing machine........I'm surprised you can even fit it in.
I think the bath method would probably work best, followed by rolling it up as tight as possible to get rid of as much water as possible. Then you would have to hang it out to dry for a few days at least.
To be honest, unless it is a very low density memory foam, a small child would be better off without the topper anyway.0 -
Well, it has been in and out now - sorry. It looks and feels OK still and yes, we have a large machine so it fitted in OK. I was worried about the foaming but it did not do that, I did not put as much detergent in as usual though. I have nicked it where it came out of the machine but as my son has already bitten the corners off (don't ask!!) that is the least of my worries.
At least I'll remember to put the waterproof sheet on next time.
The mattresses we have are pretty rubbish in all honesty and when I was laying on them to get the kids to sleep I could feel the springs so pity the poor kids sleeping on them but we did not have the money to buy new and decent mattresses so I bought the toppers instead. They are OK and lying on them is lovely now so they do the job for us.0 -

You can actually get decent middle of the range deep quilted mattrresses for less than a good quality memory foam topper.0 -
Yes but everything at a price. The mattress toppers were reduced to £30 each in the sale and I was able to carry them home. Find me any decent mattress costing £30 including delivery and I'll snap your hand off!! I did not have enough money for 2 new mattresses unfortunately so the mattress toppers had to do for now.0

Pleased it turned out ok, if it's over the bannister, keep turning it over to help it dry quicker.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0
