No stamp duty holiday after all

Oh well just have to pay it after all ......Mr Brown will give first-time buyers help in the form of a new product, HomeBuy Direct. Those earning less than £60,000 a year will be eligible to apply for a loan of up to 30 per cent of the value of a new-build house. The loans will be backed by the Government and the housing developer, and will be free for five years. Mr Brown is hoping that this will also help home-builders and construction companies, many of which are sitting on thousands of empty flats and houses built during the property boom. The Government will also bring forward funds to speed up the development of social housing. It is not clear how much the total housing package will be worth but sources indicate it will be below £1 billion.
Mr Darling has refused to approve a suspension of stamp duty for the cheapest houses, amid continuing tensions with No 10 over the extent of the package.

banks will love that one, the government gets 1st call on 30% of purchase price, the remainder might drop by 30% so even with a deposit their risk is substantially higher.
any one else get the idea this government is taking the 100 monkeys in a room approach to policy making.0 -
Does it really help FTBs to have cheap finance for property that's grossly over-priced?No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

GMTV currently reporting that Stamp duty lower threshold will be raised from £125K to £175K, which would be excellent news for me !! but it looks like we will have to wait for the little Darling himself to confirm all this !0

I must be missing something. How is this supposed to help the market? Surely it's going to push prices even further down if FTB's all flock to buy new builds. It's going to be harder for people with smaller properties looking to move up the ladder to sell which will have an effect up the chain.Questions are a burden for others; answers a prison for oneself.0

How does this help people get a mortgage to buy, isn't it mainly the lack of mortgages because no one has a deposit the reason for all this!?!?!?!?!.......
oh I see........
the government are helping out the housing developers sell their overpriced stock buying allowing you a 'free' 30% deposit.......
Vote Labour..........hmmmmmm :mad:A blonde... cleverly disguised as a Brunette.......;)0 -
