Refused Credit: Entitled to Know Why?

Hi

I recently decided to switch mobile phone provider. I just got turned down for a measly £15 a month SIM only contract with Vodafone. I'm surprised. I checked my credit report with Experian (to whom Vodafone referred me in their 'nice' letter). There is nothing obviously wrong and Experian's CreditExpert thing gave me a credit rating of 'Excellent'.

I'm concerned about going ahead and applying to my second choice (Orange) in case they turn me down too. Then I'd have run out of deals that I like the look of and damaged my credit report with multiple recorded searches.

My question is, do I have any sort of right to an explanation as to why Vodafone refused me?

  • In short no, the whole credit industry is underpinned by the fact consumers dont know exactly what they look for when credit scoring so you'd have very little chance of finding out other than what you can deduce yourself
  • [erhaps they are weeding out the 'low' spenders (even if good)..

  • Do you have anyone on your report who is financially linked to you?

Or it could be an ID issue. Are you on the Electoral Roll?
  • I am on the electoral role and no one is financially linked to me even though I am married. I have two credit cards and a current account with an overdraft which my report shows I always pay off in full each month.

I suspect that I look like someone that shops around for the best deal and won't be profitable. I wanted the vodafone deal because the £90 Quidco cashback would make if effectively free for six months.

Yes it is generally easier to get a mobile phone contract than a credit card so I think this maybe worth an appeal - companies do make mistakes from time to time.
  • Hmm. How would I go about appealing?

I've never appealed a mobile phone contact myself, but they must have a complaints procedure which you could follow.

I think I would simpy call them and ask them to look at it again because you have no history of bad credit.
