please help...Compaq Presario + PCWorld + me = Tears...

on bank holiday Sunday my husband bought me a Compaq presario CQ50 for my birthday (lucky me) by that Wednesday the laptop wouldn't recognize the CD/DVD drive....when you looked i "computer" the only thing showing was the hard drive. I phoned the "Tech Guys" who were as surprised as me and spent 20 minutes talking me through BIOS stuff (Somewhere I have never been before) and it was reinstalled (or something) anyway it was back...however it couldn't recognize CD names and tracks so after a chat with hubby we took a trip back to PC world last Saturday and took it back
The on site "Tech Guys" took a look and said a replacement laptop was the answer.....Yipee home I went.
Set it all up yesterday and guess whats just happened AGAIN no CD/DVD drive recognized.!!!!!

Please can some one help me understand what is happening to the laptop? is it likely to be a faulty batch of drives or is it something I am doing? the only thing I have on it is AVG anti virus, and mediamonkey (rather then the dreaded i-tunes) all I have done is uploaded some photos and when it failed this evening I ws uploading some CD's so I could sync my I-pod. I just don't understand whats going on can anyone shed any light at all on this ???

I have googled and come up with no answers......and I didn't phone the Tech Guys again cos I am going to take it back after work tomorrow (25 miles round trip!) as it is so they can see the problem......

Very bewildered and rather tearful that I cant have a laptop that works for more than 24hrs....I have waited years for one and now this:confused:

what happens when you put in a standard audio cd (a favourite not too scratched one)
I am not a financial advisor. Anything I post is basically just random stuff from my head. Digest it as you will. Being free of debt is good. Banks control us through debt. Caveat Emptor. Ignore anything I say. Oh and don't copy it either. Cheers. I'll have a Guinness extra cold.

Locate control panel / System / Hardware / Device manager

Look down the list for DVD/CD ROM DRIVES and see if it is listed.

If It is Right click it and choose uninstall.

    Reboot computer.

If it then does not come up take it back for repair.

On some laptops it is known for the ribbon/power cable that connects the drive to the computer to come loose and lose connection, nothing you can do about it apart from have it repaired.

Any arguments ask for a new replacement or money back.
  • When I put in a cd both brand new or a fav nothing happens the drive makes a noise but nothing more.

I am wondering if its not best to leave the laptop as is so I can prove the problem...worried if it does restore it like it did with the last one and its not working 100% they might be more difficult n giving me a refund. I am bitterly disappointed as I really liked this one.....if anyone has a minute to spair me could they look at the pc-world website and suggest a suitable replacement? around the same price

    So upset and angry

    good old vista 32,
    you need to delete the
    UPPER FILTER
    and LOWER FILTER
    in the registry
    here we go
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
(ignore "applies to" , its in same location on vista 100%)
to get in to the registry
click on start and then in the search box type regedit and then enter ,you will get a box asking for permission click continue and the regedit box will open
and for pc world not knowing about it when it's common, and they have a program that deletes them for you,
just go's to show how bad they really are and i have seen it on more lappys than i have had hot dinner, even mine has done it

if it's not showing in the bios then it's a faulty drive (just do what the tech guy told you to find out and do not change any thing in the bios)
there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff

  • Thank you all so much I went back to PC world and changed the laptop for a different one and a promise of my money back if this fails :-) very helpful but not very knowledgeable !

i think i would just take it back and ask for my money back and get a different one. i would only go through the hassle of trying to fix the problem myself if it was out of guarantee. by the way i have a compaq desktop and have had no problems. so dont think it is down to the brand and that all compaq computers are dodgy.
