Does anybody have an idea about the extra cost of self cleaning glass? we saw it on Grand Designs on channel 4.
We will be ordering upvc windows in the next 2 weeks,so i was wondering if a forum member had already bought it?
I wanted to know,is it much more expensive? does it actually work?
Obviously,i can get a quote when i order, but if someone knew already...

Looks like 15-20% more than normal glass - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3770353.stm so probably 10-15% more for a complete window.0

I'm interested in this stuff too - we have some dormer windows, which are a real pain to clean, and the window cleaner won't do them as they're on the roof.
The self cleaning glass is called Pilkington Activ (http://www.pilkington.com/international+products/activ/default.htm), but I've not yet found anywhere local that will do sealed double glazed units in it.Why pay more than you have to?0 -
Here is an update.
We had a quote last Dec (04) at £2850 for 10 upvc double glazed windows.
This Dec we decided to go ahead with the order,so we rang the company to requote with Pilkington Active glass and a few little modifications (different openings)this came to £2980.
So,the extra cost of self cleaning glass is quite small,IF it actually works,it should pay for itself fairly soon.Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0 -
We have got this glass in our roof over the kitchen, it is ok but still not as good as a wash and chamois leather, had to be put in though because it is an area difficult to get to ie roof, oh and it gets quite watermarked.
Hope this helps0
